On Wednesday, January 10, federal agents raided 7-Eleven stores across the nation.  The Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) made 21 arrests and served inspection notices at the franchise convenience stores.

This action comes after acting ICE Director Thomas Homan’s October announcement that he would increase the amount of time spent on worksite enforcement by four or five times.

Due to this environment of increased enforcement, it is prudent for employers to prepare themselves for an I-9 audit.  Most companies are employing people legally, but even simple errors on the Form I-9 can result in civil fines and criminal penalties.  An increase in the number of audits will likely impact employers who are trying to do everything right.

The corporate office of 7-Eleven released a statement explaining that per their franchise agreements, each franchise business owner is responsible for verifying work eligibility for all employees and complying with federal, state, and local employment laws.
